Tengelmann Warenhandelsgesellschaft KG, doing business as the Tengelmann Group, is a holding company based in Mülheim an der Ruhr, Germany. Tengelmann Klimamarkt has billed itself as the “supermarket for the next generation.” Built in 2008, in the small city of Mulheim-an-der-Ruhr (home to Tengelmann and Aldi HQ, among other food companies). The landmark German store emits zero carbon and maximises energy efficiency through various innovative design tweaks; tweaks which have since been imitated by other ecologically-minded retailers.
A major German supermarket chain became the latest company embroiled in the European horsemeat scandal today, withdrawing packets of frozen lasagne believed to contain horsemeat.Tengelmann said it was removing packets of its own brand ‘basics’ lasagnes from sale, but reportedly refused to identify who supplied the packets. It is the first horsemeat-related product withdrawal in Germany.
